Lots of companies have “core values.” Yet very few companies live by them. To us, our values are sacred lighthouses that guide all of our decision making. They can, perhaps, even be thought of as nonnegotiable commandments.
To operate with radical transparency, one must not keep secrets. Decisions must be open and public. We own our mistakes. We name our desires, fears, and boundaries. We play in the light and avoid hiding in the shadows. Salaries are known. Meetings are recorded. Updates are honest.
To not live up to this value one can tell lies, withhold information, form secretive cliques, hide files, avoid emotions, or steal from others.
We all have fears—that’s normal and unavoidable—what we can avoid is behavior that is more in alignment with scarcity than abundance. Love and fear represent two extreme poles, two opposite ends, two different frequencies. Living from a place of love assumes the best in ourselves and others. It means that we don’t make choices that knowingly harm ourselves or others. We live in service to our mission—not the almighty dollar. Loving leaders are optimistic and use invitations, while fearful leaders are pessimistic and use force. Love is honest and fear is deceitful.
To live in fear means to horde resources and to assume the worst in others. Fear causes people to cheat, steal, and lie. Fear leads to anger. As Yoda famously said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
